Introduction

You are living in Tokyo with your Japanese host family, whose members include your host parents, a little sister, and a grandmother with arthritis. Soon you will take a trip with them to an 温泉 before returning home to the United States。 You want to give them a gift to thank them for their hospitality, and decide to design a special 手拭い for them, which they can take to the 温泉。You have already learned how to use Japanese bath utensils at an 温泉 bath. Today you will explore 手拭い , discover multiple ways that they can be used, and design your own 手拭い.

Tasks
You will answer the worksheet questions to prepare you to design your own original tenugui, and invent a new use for it. Then on the class wiki, you will post a picture (or video) of the tenugui you design, with pictures and descriptions in Japanese about how to use it in a traditional way, and in a new way.

Process

  1. You will read about tenugui and answer the questions on your worksheet. [Cooper worksheet webquest]
  2. You will create an original design for your own tenugui, by first drawing a rough draft on paper. Make sure that your design represents your host family, and yourself, in some way. Also make sure that your design reflects your thanks your host family for their hospitality.
  3. Next you will draw your design on your cloth with a pencil, and then go over it with permanent markers. Alternately, you can use dye to create a tie dye effect.
  4. You will invent a new use for your tenugui, and choose one traditional use [http://thematic4hs.wikispaces.com/Cooper+Supplementary+Reading+Material].
  5. On the class wiki, you will post a picture (or video)of your tenugui, along with pictures/videos and explanations (in Japanese) about how to use your tenugui in a traditional way and in your new way.
  6. You will compare tenugui to American-stye towels through a small experiment.
  7. Finally, you will present your original tenugui, and how to use it, to the class (in Japanese).

Step 2 (Tasks)

  1. Design your own tenugui, by first creating a design on paper, and then drawing the design on your cloth in pencil.
  2. Invent a new way to use or wear a tenugui.
  3. On the class wiki, post a picture (or video)of your tenugui, with pictures (or video)and an explanation in Japanese about how to wear/use it in a traditional way 〈伝統的, )and in your new contemporary way  〈現代的)。
  4. Look at your classmates` tenugui photos on the wiki, and post at least three comments in Japanese. [see example]
  5. Work with a classmate to compare a hemmed tenugui to an unhemmed one, and compare both to an American-style towel. First hem one of the tenugui, and then dampen the two tenugui, as well as the towel. Observe the drying process, answer Question 7 on the worksheet, and describe what you find out.
  6. Present your tenugui, and your ways to use or wear it, to the class in Japanese.


Evaluation

You will be graded on your answers to the worksheet questions, your wiki posting with original tenugui design and how to wear/use your tenugui, and your presentation to the class.

Conclusion

But why wait until you get to the onsen? You can start using your tenugui at home and at school. When it comes to tenugui, you are only limited by your imagination!
